Mohamed Salah has yet to agree a new deal with Liverpool, his current deal expires at the end of next season, and Jurgen Klopp is reluctant to repeat the same mistakes with Sadio Mane

Jurgen Klopp has revealed the mistakes he made with Mo Salah’s contract.

The Liverpool boss insists he won’t make the same mistake when it comes to the new contract of another of his top stars, Sadio Mane. Both players could start talks with some of Europe’s biggest clubs in January, meaning the Anfield club has just nine months to negotiate with two of their most iconic names.

Mane has kept a low profile in his own conversations, focusing almost exclusively on Salah’s protracted and sometimes heated discussions, which have led to some harsh comments from his agent. But even the Senegal star believes his current contract – like Salah – is set for the summer of 2023, and seems to have the same sticking point in extending his stay at Anfield.

Mane is 30 years old, which means he has reached an age where Liverpool are reluctant to offer substantial long-term contracts. Salah will also turn 30 in June, making negotiations more difficult than expected. If no deal can be reached, the possibility of losing two players remains. But Mane showed his stellar performance against Manchester City in the FA Cup final at the weekend was far from done.

Klopp admitted it ahead of the Manchester United game, praising the African star’s incredible physicality and insisting he could play into his 30s, saying: “Yes, he can…if If he wants.” But it also worried Liverpool fans when he asked about the contract negotiations, with Klopp admitting he made a mistake with Salah and he didn’t want to repeat it with Mane.

“It was my fault, I made a mistake when I was talking to you about the Mexican contract situation, which I don’t normally do, and it caused a lot of misunderstandings,” he said. “You asked again, so I’m going to go back to what I was doing before, closing the door again and not talking about any kind of negotiation or anything.
